The first OFC Nations Cup tournament in eight years kicks off in just over a month's time.

For Papua New Guinea much has changed since they pushed New Zealand all the way in the 2016 final, only to lose in a penalty shoot out.

After a promising run during World Cup qualifying in 2022, the wheels came off, culminating in a 10-0 loss to Malaysia in June last year, and then a failure to make the knock-out stage at the Pacific Games.

That was former A-League coach Warren Moon's first time in charge of the Kapuls, and since then he has extended his contract and is on a mission to revitalise soccer in PNG where it plays second fiddle to rugby league.

But right now Moon says the infrastructure in PNG is just not good enough to provide what he needs, and so the call has gone out for players elsewhere in the world with PNG heritage to step forward.

And already some in Europe and the United States have done that.

Warren Moon says the aim is the widen the talent pool in the short term, until the right structure is in place in country, and he believes he can take the Kapuls back to the top of the tree in the Pacific once again.
